Time Flies, for real!   A West Coast Overview. . .

Sunday, January 29, 2005-- 6:30 PM

It's unbelievable that the month of January is damn-near over. O'Six has popped off like a ten-year old cork, and is now operating at rocket speed.   And, speaking of ten-years, it's been about that long since The West has had Heat-- Above Ground. The early to mid-nineties was when Dr. Dre' & Snoop (with Tha Eastsidaz), PAC & Too Short, The Dogg Pound, Warren G & Ice Cube (along with the newly formed Westside Connection) to name a few, had taken over music. Eazy E introduced us to Bone Thugz, Ras Kaz was doin' his thing and groups like The Twinz were makin' Conversation West Coast Style.   Biggie blew through for the East in the late nineties, Suge acted a fool as the face of what the world viewed as The West, and we haven't seen the same shine since. Yup, ever since those good 'ol days, love for The West has gotten cold. With The South now burnin' up radio and blowin' up charts, and major players like Jay-Z, Nas, and Diddy getting continuous shine in the media for the East, The West has been completely ignored. What's been goin' on in The West anyway? The Game blew up and then shit got crazy. He's involved in so much beef, he could end world hunger. And his main beef is the entity that controls his major album release, so now we can only hear from him on the internet. Our beloved Cube is now a mega- movie writer, producer and star, Bone Thugz broke up (at least as far as I'm concerned), Too Short retired, Ras Kass went to jail (and though he just got out last year he has yet to knock us [or really, me] over with a heater), The Regulator, Warren G, is still grindin':  And, though he's the business, his status has yet to reach Super. Yeah, and let me not forget DJ Quick reppin' for the CPT & E-40 holdin' down that Bay YAy-REE-a. But, truly, as we can all damn well see, hardly no independent labels, or especially majors, are representing What's Good in The West to the fullest. But all of that is in Transition, here and now, as I write this piece. The Clock is tickin' with Heat. Breathin' all down ya neck. Hang-tight.

Despite the industry's boot pressin' on the back of The West while seemingly down, we are rising with the strength that the talent and numbers are finally able to prove. Though Snoop has been holdin' it down from the beginning (and seemingly the only one who has lasted as long and strong), while representing as the face of The West Worldwide, L.A.'s hoods have been bubblin' with young, raw, and hungry talent who are now ready to take the reigns and soar The West into the Horizon. I feel it's been too long, but everything happens in its own time. Please believe, there is a real movement happening with soldiers like G. Malone, Bishop Lamont, Problem, Profit, Bugsy Lane, Pistol, Noni Spitz, Dae One, Taje, Mykestro, Stix, Kila Krock, the Frontlinerz, Dem Jointz, Darkside, Chevy Jones, Krys Ivory, Chase, Geo Brown, Disko, Dj Rampage & RobLee & Change (the I.E.'s BQ) on the Frontlines. And, let's not forget the Black Riders Liberation Party (The self proclaimed New Black Panthers) fully representing in the streets for the preservation of Black Rights and Black Life in general. Can you feel it? I don't know about you, but for me I can feel its drum is beating through my bones.

As I mentioned in a previous editorial, this movement is not just music.   Literature is also in effect, and we're representing with Overdue Exposure Magazine to document this time and to help infect others with its magic. Look forward to transcripts (this was before we began work on our cable show) from interviews with Bishop Lamont (over 3 hours of conversation at Bally's Fitness), Chevy Jones (Girl-talk at its finest), and producer Dem Jointz (the Truth and nothing but!). We also have video clips from our cable show (to premiere soon on local cable outlets to be announced) with Comedian Shang, Rappers Problem, Noni Spitz, Taje', Kila Krock, Giftee, Bugsy Lane, The Fontlinerz, Sons of Jacob, Guerilla Black, and more. We will also bring footage of hot performances from L.A.'s underground just to let you know first-hand that The West is not playin'!
